USDA Organic and the Farmers Market
In recent years the green USDA certified organic label has begun appearing just about everywhere. A trip around my local supermarket provides me an opportunity to buy everything from apple juice and milk to chicken and cheese. As a consumer that tries to buy organic as much as possible, especially for my kids, this has a high convenience factor. As more and more of these big retail chains develop their own organic product lines the price differential should also begin to decrease making it more and more affordable.
All well and good you would think until you take a walk around my local farmers market, the birthplace of the organic farming movement. Out of two dozen farm stands only two are USDA certified organic with the others carrying signage proclaiming they are California Certified Farmers or All Natural or Pesticide Free or some other catchy slogan.
It is quite likely that all these farmers are meeting the same USDA standards but are unable to meet the criteria necessary for certification. The reason is simply that the certification process is an arduous, time consuming exercise which is hugely cost ineffective for many of these producers. Each fruit or vegetable or herb or nut must be tracked almost daily from seed to sale. Water reports, soil reports, means and methods must be fully documented to be viewed at any time by USDA inspectors. Considering that many of these small producers may have a hundred or more items they produce in any given year it makes it almost impossible to achieve. The California Institute of Rural Studies estimates that the turnover amongst organic producers is approximately 20% a year citing regulatory paperwork and certification fees as the main issues.
Unfortunately, the USDA standards are all we have at the moment that give us a pretty rock solid guarantee that something has been grown without any additives, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, hormones etc.
In recent years several other standards have appeared including Certified Naturally Grown which uses the USDA standards but does not require the mountains of accompanying paperwork. Inspections of farms are done by members themselves although they cannot inspect the farm that had inspected them.
In a nutshell, I think that although the USDA certification is a good thing, its demands may exclude the very people it was originally designed to support. Myself, I have very little faith in the actions of the USDA or the FDA and believe that a relationship between you and your food producers is more important. I have visited the farms where I get my produce and I am fairly certain how it is grown and trust the people who bring it to market. It doesn’t have the little green label on it but its organic to me.

Evo Morales – From Farmer to President
Commonly known to citizens in Bolivia as Evo Morales or just plain Evo, he is Bolivia’s president Juan Evo Morales Ayma. The forty-nine year old was elected Bolivia’s President on December 18, 2005, with just fewer than 55% of the popular vote. This farmer with no high school education made promises that many thought were outrageous, such as naturalization of Bolivia’s oil and gas resources and Agrarian reform. To many people’s disbelief, it took only eight months for him to make Bolivia a multi-natural and multi-cultural state. This is just one amazing fact pertaining to this man who became president.
Morales, in title only, is the president of the federation of coca growers’ union. This federation is known as Bolivia’s cocalero movement, in which campesinos are trying to put an end to the US elimination of coca in central Bolivia. This role may have started the fire inside him to become president.
It is said that he became interested in assisting the growers when he learned that another farmer had been beaten and tortured by soldiers. He is the son of coca farmers and was raised in the Altiplano region, so these events hit close to home.
It may just be his uniqueness that makes him so favored by the people of Bolivia. In 2006, he cut his salary by almost 60%. His first lady is basically his sister, Esther Morales Ayma and he has two children. In 1995, he founded MAS (Movemento al Socialismo), an indigenous-based political party that calls for the nationalization of industry, legalization of the coca leaf and distribution of national resources.
Showing how he is much like his people, he has a great interest in sports. He is an avid soccer player and was head of a local football organization. His style of dressed is often left to be desired and he was known not to wear the traditional suit or even a tie upon being inaugurated.
Morales is showing to keep his promises as well as running the country on his terms, with power. The following are just a few headlines surrounding Morales since taking office, again all along the lines of his campaign.
In November, Evo Morales announced that any vehicle caught smuggling fuel out of the country would be secured. Bolivia is known to be rich in natural gas but does possess a fuel shortage. This may be because Bolivia subsidizes energy prices. So illegal exportation of the fuel runs rapid. Not long after this hit the wire President Bush announced he was suspending a key trade pact with Bolivia, country failed to cooperate with U.S. anti-drug efforts.
Why Many Indian Farmers Commit Suicide
It seems Indian farmers are deeply in need of its government’s attention as millions are trying to end their lives due to poverty and inability to pay their loans.
Many reported cases of debt-ridden farmers drinking low-cost variety of hair dye to simply end their misery are an example of these people who struggle the trying times in India’s remote areas. But authorities have already ordered not to sell cheap hair dyes to the farmers.
With 11 incidents of Indian farmers who had died in Uttar Pradesh for the past three months, these are an indication that many farmers would rather commit suicide than live a life of hopelessness and struggle.
India belonging to the category of developing nations may in some way has left behind the welfare of the agricultural sector. The poor situation of farmers living in the western and southern India may not have been given priority by the government causing many to commit suicide, instead of waiting to die.
Two-thirds of the Indian population of 1.1 billion belongs to the agricultural sector.
Ganesh Kumar, principal of the Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College, said drinking hair dye is sure means to cause kidney failure. But the selling, he added, of hair dyes have bee strictly also prohibited.
As part of the climate change that we are currently experiencing, the farmlands of India are a no exception. For the past four years, the Bundelkhand region has encountered drought due to lack of monsoon rains. Many young and old males have changed jobs and migrated to the nearby cities. Those who are left to take good care of the unproductive lands are the women and the elderly.
As these things happen in India, I am wondering how desperate these farmers are to think of killing themselves instead of pursuing to continue life no matter what. Probably, dying has been the only way to end their hardships in life.
If only many will support movements for the general good like prioritizing budgets and funding, then these farmers could have been spared from ending their lives. Every life is as important as any other. So, it should not be wasted.
