When people think about traditional living room decor, first things that usually crosses their minds are big palaces, hotels, huge houses etc. Today is basically a modern period so one would expect modern and contemporary designs. However, we can still see traditional living room furniture in many places because of formal and graceful effect it causes.

If you want to create traditional atmosphere in your home, then you have to understand that lighting is one of the most important things. Desired mood can be achieved by proper selection of lighting fixtures.

People usually use soft lighting for traditional atmosphere.

Proper color selection as well as usage of proper patterns and fabrics is of vital importance. It is advised to use repeated colors on upholstery and drapes. Also, try not to stick to only one pattern. Use few different patterns. Also, you need to ensure that everything fits well together.

Wood is the most common material when we are talking about traditional living room furniture.

You should always aim to expose sofa’s legs. That way traditional ambiance is guaranteed. Traditional furniture always include wooden chairs so make sure to use that as well.

The color of walls also plays a big role. The traditional ambiance calls for classic elegance so bear that in mind. Try to use lighter colors and therefore you should avoid darker ones. That will grant an ‘open’ feeling to your living room and add a dose of warmth.

Also, you selection of furniture must go well with overall atmosphere you are trying to achieve. Material should be wood because wood brings special traditional feeling. Color should be brown or dark brown, sometimes maybe even black.

Try not to put too many items in you living room – sofa set, TV stand and wall lighting might be more than enough.

Article by Ruthsella Corasol

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author’s note. To set the mood for this article, be sure to search any search engine for “Ladies in Lavender”, composer Nigel Hess, violinist Joshua Bell, recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, 2004. It is based on a short story by William Locke (1916), filmed in 2004.

Before starting this music, put aside all the cares of your day, make yourself comfortable, and allow yourself the shear bliss of indulgence in this most lyric and evocative of scores.

There is a famous quotation that one always finds the particular England one goes in search of. Today we are en route, via the unrelenting power of remembrance, to the most loved England of all…

You are walking in the springtime of May through a woodland dappled with sunlight, repository of ancient secrets and long-ago laughter. Everything about this wood sings of a special place, a place of beauty and serenity, a place where there is peace, and to spare, for the weary traveler… without knowing why, you feel at home here, at once… every step taking you in a direction you now know you have always wanted to go… you cannot say why, but this is home… the home you have always wanted and cherish.

Every fibre of your being is happy… such is your joy in this place, a world apart where you are expected, as if everything about this place knows you and has been waiting, forever and patiently, for you…. and now rejoices at your arrival.

You are walking up a hillock… and in a moment you are at the top and then you know, no one needs tell you, why you are happy, at ease, serene…

On every side, you see — and then inhale — the sweet lavender. Fields of beauty! Acres so rich in flower you catch your breath… for there is such abundance that you are sure there is comfort enough here for the world burdened by its dismays and distractions.

You are glad that on such a day as this, glorious in every way, this last glory, too, has been vouch-safed you, to live forever in your heart..

Lavender has done its healing work again, certain balm for the troubled soul, your soul.

“We shall find a cleanly room lavender in the windows and twenty ballads stuck about the wall.”

Izaak Walton, “The Compleat Angler”. 1653-55.

Facts about lavender.

The lavenders are a genus of 39 species of flowering plants in the mint family. An Old World genus, distributed from Cape Verde and Canary Islands and Madeira, across Africa, the Mediterranean, South-West Asia, Arabia, Western Iran and South- East India. There is some reason for thinking the genus originated in India.

The leaves are long and narrow in most species. In other species they are pinnately toothed, or pinnate, sometimes multiple pinnate and dissected. Flowers are borne in whorls, held on spikes rising above the foliage. Flowers may be blue, violet, or lilac. The calyx is tubular, with five lobes. The corolla is often asymmetric. All this readies us for the most beloved lavender of all….

Lavandula angustifolia, English lavender.

Those without a drop of poetry in their veins call it “common” lavender, but wiser folk know there is nothing common about our relationship to lavender and the many ways it eases our lives.

Culinary uses.

Flowers yield abundant nectar from which bees, insightful and industrious, make a high-quality honey. Flowers can be candied and are sometimes used as cake decorations. Lavender flavors baked goods and desserts; it pairs especially well with chocolate and is also used to make “lavender sugar”. Lavender flowers are occasionally blended with black, green, or herbal tea, adding a fresh, relaxing scent and flavor.

Lavender lends a floral and slightly sweet flavor to most dishes, and is sometimes paired with sheep’s-milk and goat’s-milk cheeses. For most cooking applications the dried buds (also referred to as flowers) are used, though some chefs experiment with the leaves as well. Only the buds contain the essential oil of lavender, from which the scent and flavor of lavender are best derived.

The French are also known for their lavender soup, most commonly made from an extract of lavender. In the United States, both French lavender syrup and dried lavender buds are used to make lavender scones and marshmallows.

Medicinal uses.

Lavender is used extensively with herbs and aromatherapy.

English lavender yields an essential oil with sweet overtones, and can be used in balms, salves, perfumes, cosmetics, and topical applications. Essential oil of lavender has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It was used in hospitals during World War I to disinfect floors and walls. These extracts are also used as fragrances by bath products.

According to folk wisdom, lavender has many uses. Infusions of lavender soothe and heal insect bites and burns. Bunches of lavender repel insects. If applied to the temples, lavender oil soothes headaches. In pillows lavender seeds and flowers aid sleep and relaxation. An infusion of three flowerheads added to a cup of boiling water soothes and relaxes at bedtime. Lavender oil (or extract of lavender) heals acne when used diluted 1:10 with water, rosewater or witch hazel; it also treats burns and inflammatory conditions.

More uses.

Flower spikes are used for dried flower arrangements. The fragrant, pale purple flowers and flower buds are used in potpourris. Lavender is also used extensively as herbal filler inside sachets used to freshen linens. Dried and sealed in pouches, lavender flowers are placed among stored items of clothing to give a fresh fragrance and to deter moths. Dried lavender flowers have become recently popular for wedding confetti.

Our constant friend and solace, humble despite such great gifts.

Ancient peoples were well aware of lavender’s bounty and succor. So well regarded, it was one of the holy herbs used in the biblical Temple to prepare the holy essence. It was a plant, a scent that never intruded. It lifted! Soothed! Gave respite and release! As such it helped deliver the peace of God.

The magnificent English poet Edward Lear (1812-1888), partaker of lavender’s solace, wrote characteristic nonsense more revealing than lucid prose:

“… his aunt jobiska made him drink lavender water tinged with pink, for she said, ‘the world in general knows there’s nothing so good for a pobble’s toes!’”

This is why when you are weary, sore oppressed, make your way, if only in memory, to the place of these amiable and most hospitable of flowers. Sit down and drink in their beauty, given to you at the moment you most need it, for these are the good Samaritans, offering you in all humility what they most embody — the enduring comfort of God Himself.

The family room is a room for many uses. Whether you are watching television, playing games, or just gathering for conversation, your family room should be a relaxing atmosphere designed as a multi-purpose room.

Adding some color to the decor of your dining area through window treatments and rugs is one of the best dining room decorating ideas you can have. Curtains and drapes come in all kinds of colors as well as styles and they are relatively cheap when given other alternatives. You will want to the same style as your kitchen but changing the color will not take away from the coordination between the kitchen and dining area.

Consider about the color and paint in the room. Commonly people use white wall to color. Another choice, you can discus with your family members. Consider that the color must set to your mood. Now think about yours, which color you like and which color you will use for it.

Keep picture sizes small wherever possible, or maybe a large one in one of the larger walls.

Avoid substantially large pictures as far as possible. A two-seater settee, rather than a three-seater will create an impression of space. Mirrors are good accessories as long as they are placed in strategic positions as they refract light around the room.

Traditionally African masks can be very colourful so it will almost certainly stand out where ever you decide to put it in your room. One thing you need to think about when using an African mask for decoration is the meaning of the mask. There are many African masks that have great historical context behind them and you might want to add one that has a positive story behind its creation.

Create a must have list, and start at the top when putting an affordable living room decorating plan in action. There should be one or two pieces that are the focal points of your affordable living room decorating effort, and thus try to obtain those first, and build around them. By considering this in your affordable living room decorating plan, you will be automatically thinking about an actual design, what most people forget to do when they shop for affordable furniture.

Everyone wants to have the most interesting interior. The problem is that sometimes interesting is bad, it can even be offensive, or tacky. Since the living room is such a social space, it is on public display, and the decisions you make here will be judged by anyone who enters the home.

Another key element in living room decorating ideas is lighting. Make sure your lighting is adequate, but not overpowering. Don’t use florescent lights as they are very harsh, and a living room is all about mood. Use an updated overhead fixture to provide general light, and a few lamps around the room for task lighting. Another lighting aspect that is often overlooked is the use of candles.

Wallpaper murals are a quick and affordable way to dress up your walls. They have become very popular because of their classic and trendy styles. They are easy to hang but you must make certain your walls are clean and straight. Most murals come prepasted and will typically include easy to follow instructions to help make your experience a breeze. Stencils can bring out the best features of wall mural and you do not need to be an artist.

When arranging your furniture in the family room be sure that there is plenty of walking space in between the pieces. People should have a comfortable amount of space to walk but should not be too far away so that the space isn’t intimate anymore. No one wants to be bumping into the furniture when walking around but you also don’t want to have to shout to talk to another person in the room.

However, for the ceiling this needs to be a brighter shade. If your living room couch is worn out, you do not necessarily need to upholster it or buy a new one. You can give it a makeover by simply buying new cushions. You can mix cushions of different shapes, colors and designs. The color should aid you in choosing the cushion colors. If its light colored, orange and jade cushions will work well to brighten up the room.

They spend a considerable amount of time there playing, reading and of course, sleeping. When they have friends over, this is likely where they will hang out. They might play games, listen to music and more all in this room so it is important that while decorating, you choose themes and ideas that will make the child most comfortable.

What are some ways you can decorate your kid’s room with style that both they and you will love? Here are some ideas for you:

1. Talk to your child. Take time to learn what they like and what they would like to have in their rooms. Learn about their favorite colors and their favorite things so you know how to decorate a room they will love to be in.

2.

Let your child help you. What better way to ensure you develop a room they love than to let them help you with it?

3. Keep it organized. Remember that children are going to have a hard time with clutter and with keeping these picked up so the more you can help them with organization, the better it will be. If there are furniture items you can buy to help with organization, this will help considerably.

4. Wall décor- Don’t forget the walls. Children love to have something colorful and nice to look at. You can even get wall art that is practical such as decorative mirrors and whimsical child clocks.

5. Wall coverings- For a child’s room, you should keep your wall coverings as simple as possible. While you want to complement the room, you also want to keep it simple for your child to manage and not have drapes that will get in the way or become damaged.

6.

Plan your lighting- Just like in other rooms of your home, you may want to have more that one type of lighting here in your kid’s room. You can have a main light for reading, playing and other activities and a softer, more relaxed light for getting ready for bedtime or even as a nightlight. There are also many great decorative nightlights for you to choose from.

7. Display handmade items- Allow your child the freedom to show off things they create by hand. Allow them to decorate their walls with posters or handmade crafts and display handmade items in their room. This shows that you are impressed with their craftiness and also makes the room more personal for them.

This is not an extensive list as there are many more great ways you can decorate your kid’s room.

An effective decoration of a room largely depends on its size and shape and mainly the purpose for which it is going to be used. Living room decoration can be either a simple task or a complicated one depending on the people that are going to use it. Simple if it is going to be empty for most of the time except when the family is at home; complicated if a lot of entertainment is going to take place. But that does not mean that it should not be the opposite also. It largely depends on the person who is going to decorate it. Another complication would be if a constant stream of children and pets are going to be traversing the room.

The shape of the room also has a big say in the kind of décor that it can take. In a large room with plenty of space, it can be segregated into some definite functional space. A small office space beneath the stairs or a formal dining area in a separate place by itself.

The use of colors also has a telling impact on the atmosphere of a room. If not judiciously used a large room may look small and cold; if judiciously used a small room can be made to look larger and warmer. The wall art and other accessories in the living room sets its ambience. The more uncluttered the room the more comfortable it is to live in and spend time.

Living room decorating ideas evolve and change from year to year and is sometimes set by the leading interior decorators.

But it is best to look at what they have to offer and go by your instincts. It is “your” living room. And the choice of colors and accessories so wide that it is fairly impossible to get to know them. Understand what the primary, the secondary and the tertiary colors are, the color wheel and the basic principles of mixing them and you can come up with shades that could better the display in a paint store.

Blue is the most preferred color. Think of blue and the first thing that comes to your mind is the blue sky or the blue sea that instills a sense of serenity and tranquillity to your mind; and a living room is just where such an atmosphere should prevail. It is left to your creativeness, your imagination and your ingenuity as to how you decorate your living room. Close your eyes and imagine what kind f environment you would like to come to and plan your décor accordingly. Once you have settled on the colors for the walls and the ceiling, think of the colors for the doorways and the windows. Proceed step by step. Next comes the furniture which should complement the color scheme and finally comes the accessories like the mirrors, the carpets, the flower vases and the flowers etc.

This is the ideal way to give shape to your living room decorating ideas. Apply them a create an awe inspiring living room that you and your guests can really enjoy.

Background: The culinary use of flowers dates back thousands of years. Many different cultures have used flowers in their traditional foods. The Chinese have been using daylilies, lotus & chrysanthemums for centuries. Italian & Hispanic cultures use stuffed squash blossoms. American colonists made violet vinegar & mutton broth with marigolds. Odysseus encountered the lotus-eating Sybarites on his way home from Troy. Dandelions were one of the bitter herbs referred to in the Old Testament of the Bible.

Flowers can be consumed raw, cooked, or infused in sauce. All edible flowers can be used as a decoration to a dish or on a tray. They add a distinctive color and taste to cakes, pastries & salads. Vinegar changes the color of the flowers, so it is best to serve the salad dressing on the side. Flowers add elegance to beverages when floating in a punch bowl or frozen in ice cubes. Edible flowers can also be used in teas.

Tips for Beginners:

Do not eat flowers if you have hay fever, asthma or allergies. Do not eat flowers obtained from a florist, nursery or garden center. Do not eat flowers growing on the side of the road. With the widespread use of pesticides by commercial growers, purchase edible flowers from a supplier who grows them specifically for consumption. Due to their popularity, many grocery stores & gourmet markets now sell edible flowers. It is most ideal to grow them yourself, so you know they are completely pesticide-free. If you decide to grow your own flowers to eat, be certain you know your flowers since not all are edible. Some are poisonous. Pick flowers on the day you are planning to use them. It is best to pick them in the morning or late afternoon when the water content is high. Select flowers that are freshly-opened; avoid flowers that are not fully open (unless buds are desired) or those starting to wilt. Select flowers free of diseased spots or insect damage. Normally, the petals are the only parts to be eaten. To maintain maximum freshness, keep flowers cool after harvest. Store your flowers, whole, in a container of water and place them in the refrigerator until you need to use them. Blooms and short-stemmed flowers can be kept fresh by laying them between layers of dampened paper-towel. Before use, wash flowers thoroughly in salt water. Perk them up by dropping them into a bowl of ice water for 30-60 seconds; then drain on paper towels. Remove all the green parts, stems and leaves, and any white ‘heels’ on petals since these parts can often be bitter. Petals can be stored for a day in a plastic bag in the refrigerator – but, ideally, you should use them within a few hours. Introduce flowers into your diet one at a time in small quantities.

How to Crystallize Flowers to Decorate Cakes & Candies: Combine one extra-large egg white (at room temperature) with a few drops of water and beat lightly until the white shows a few bubbles. Using a small paint brush, paint a thin layer of egg white onto both sides of a clean, dry petal. Gently place the petal into a shallow bowl of superfine sugar to coat the bottom of the petal; sprinkle sugar on top to cover the top of the petal. Gently shake off any excess sugar. Lay the petal on waxed paper to dry. Let the flowers dry completely; they should be free of any moisture. This could take 8 to 36 hours.

A Partial Listing of Edible Flowers:

Anise Hyssop Apple Bee Balm tea Bergamot Borage Calendula Chive Chrysanthemum Cornflower Day Lily Dianthus English Daisy Fuschia Hollyhock Johnny Jump-Ups Lavender Lilac Mint Nasturtium Pansy Peach Plum Prickly Pear Rose Rosemary Sage Signet Marigold Squash Blossom Violet Yucca

The bathroom is not just a utility but also a lovely room where you should enjoy spending most of your free time. That is why bathroom decorations must be put in place to make this your best room. A well-decorated bathroom will be a wonderful start to a morning as you take that shower to start your day. It will help in setting the mood to provide you with the much-needed beautiful start to a busy day. These days, bathrooms are designed to appear like any other important room you have in your home. A bathroom decorating idea that works all the time is the introduction of bathroom cabinets. These cabinets shouldn’t only be elegant but functional as well to ensure that they provide what you need.

To create these cabinets stand out, it is important to settle for frames that are made of stainless-steel and frosted glass among other contemporary designs. The next thing is to arrange your towels, cosmetics and cleaning accessories and your bathroom will definitely look magnificent. Color is another bathroom decoration that makes it look exotic, warm, and inviting. Settling on the right colors will definitely give your bathroom a luxurious finish that will make it your favorite room. When settling for bathroom colors, it is very important pick on a theme that will be present on all the bathroom pieces. These include the napkins, towels, tiles, the wall, faucets, and the potted plants. If you have a small bathroom, it is a great idea to add mirrors that give an illusion of space thus making your bathroom look bigger.

These colors will go with personal preference and some people may opt for white, gold, black and white or aqua among others. However, you should keep away from colors such as peach, lime green and some yellow shades as they may not be very pleasant in the morning. Bathroom decorations will also include lighting which if properly done will give your bathroom a new lease of life. The lighting must be clear since other shades may play effects that are not ideal. You do not want to look into a mirror and see a green face! A bathroom lighting tip is that you must stay away from fluorescents since they have a paling effect. It is important to ensure that the lights are facing you and reflectors must be avoided.

Bathroom decorations will not be complete without a rug since they accentuate its look. Bathroom rugs are available in different sizes, textures and colors and the designs range from seaside to floral. The use of wall hangings makes ideal bathroom decorations and picking on one that matches the other pieces present will bring out a beautiful finish. Bathroom vanities are another way to decorate your bathroom as they act as centerpieces. It should match with the dcor in place and should be clutter free at all times. Bathroom decorations also include furniture such as towel racks, chairs, medicine chests, and settees as well. These must coordinate with the bathrooms theme to enhance the serenity and glamour.

Though there are people who fight against the effects of growing an own garden, it’s not very easy to do so. Many people in fact try it out.

Many will not be having the right space, water and air to grow a garden. People find it very tough to spend hour’s together gardening and might not find it realistic. It’s a very nice task to grow own vegetables.

Green beans are the easiest to grow. It just needs a room’s area of around 12 inches by 12 inches and this yield lot of beans. Watering has to be done in the beginning and finally produces lot of plantations.

The bowl of green beans has so many nutrients namely beta carotene, lutein, vitamin K, choline, vitamin c and potassium. When it is being canned it loses all the nutritive values. When it is frozen then it can be used in future.

There are so many herbs that can be easily grown. They might not be very costly. Those are chives, parsley, kale, mint, and tarragon. Parsley and beans have the same quantity of lutein and vitaminK. Chives have beta carotene, folate, and vitamin K.

Lutein and beta carotene are Carotenoids. These are antioxidants that help in the absorption of blue and near-ultraviolet rays. It causes destruction to the eyes and causes resilience of the macula lutea. It stops the macular degeneration.

Cholates are necessary for the liver to work and for cholesterol health. Potassium is a hydrating ion. People having the broad-spectrum antibiotics suffer from the lack of vitamin k. Vitamin K are vital for bone, muscle and tissue development and general health.

Comparing a potassium supplement health drink and a cup of green beans, the green bean is a always a step ahead. The health drinks will affect the teeth and cause other related health problems.

Gardening is a very interesting hobby and it needs a lot of creativity. It is both fun and useful. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is to grow a good garden. One can do decorations and also patio gardening.

Stocking fillers are perhaps one of the best bits about Christmas – sure you get all those big fancy gifts all smartly wrapped under the tree too – but there’s something really exciting about those personal and humorous little that turn up in the foot of an old festive sock!

They’ll love the cute little Reindeer Mo-pod, a little tiny reindeer that spins, flashes and dances when your mobile phone rings! It’s a gadget from Japan which won ‘Gift of the Year’ in 2007 for its innovation and general addictiveness! You’ll certainly never miss a call again.

Otherwise parents can have fun with the ‘control-a-kid’ remote control gadget – really fun little stocking fillers which will amuse stressed-out parents everywhere who’ve always wished they could either turn down their teenager’s ‘volume’ or get them to put the kettle on! Probably worth noting that it’s not an actually scientifically-proven tool mind…

Fun loving types – brothers or overgrown students – will probably enjoy stocking fillers like the on a roll ‘crime scene’ toilet paper. Presented in a clear gift box, this printed ‘police style tape’ loo roll helps seal off the bathroom when a emergency has occurred and evacuation may be necessary….Or bring some real aesthetic style and class into your home decor scheme with the ‘splat stan’ silicone rubber coaster. Featuring a ‘splatted’ stan, reminiscent of playdough characters from your youth -Stan protects your Mum’s fancy table, whilst making your cup look, erm, stylish. Stan belongs to the Dead Fred’s series – one to impress your friends with or cause a bit of a stir in the office….

Otherwise why not try some classic comedy stocking fillers – such as the amazing flying monkey! A soft toy with a magical cape and a secret power – flying monkey is like a catapult and he soars through the air for up to fifteen meters! Even better, he makes noisy ape sounds as he flies! House of entertainment guaranteed, for kids aged six to sixty…

Why not show you really care with a loving ‘last Rolo, and not the half-melted hair-covered one in your jeans pocket either, but a beautiful gold plated souvenir one in a gorgeous red box.

Stocking fillers even get green, with funky little seed packs, designed to get even the clumsiest fingers growing away! Try a little gift pack of organic garden mint – a perennially popular herb which brightens up everything from salads to mojitos! The seeds also geminate in just two to three weeks, so impatient folk will be able to harvest their ‘crop’ very quickly! You can get other garden kits too – including tea and coffee growing kits for caffeine addicts, or even a grow-your-own bonsai tree, for those wishing to bring a bit of zen into your life!

Stocking fillers get an extra-special touch when they feature the recipient’s name – such as the personalised film lover’s diary, featuring twelve classic flim images to brighten any cinema buff’s day…All on high quality paper with a glossy luxurious finish – you pick your loved one’s name and our techie experts will do the rest! Similarly, why not try a personalised dressing room sticker – designating the sanctity of your dressing room, and keeping those fans (or demanding family members) out to let you straighten your hair in peace… or present your loved one with a cute little personalised print, with their name spelt out in one of the many images on offer – clouds in the sky, chocolate sweets, flowers, marked into sand etc – these stocking fillers are certainly more stylish and glamourous than your average !

For real retro fun, bring back the old days with a ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ soap on a rope! It’s a fully licensed replica badge from the famous kids’ programme, and comes presented on a red satin ribbon. Going into the shower never was so much fun! For similarly quirky stocking fillers you could also try the wedge of cheese door stop – or encourage your creative kids to write down their pearls of genius with the cute ‘ideas’ notebook – who knows, it may eventually make its way into a museum exhibition one day when they’re rich and famous….

As you can see, have come an awfully long way since the time when all anyone could expect was a sugar mouse, a satsuma and a piece of coal! Online shopping has brought a real wealth of funny, unusual and downright bizarre little stocking fillers right at your fingertips – so get clicking and bring some smiles to your loved ones’ faces this Christmas!
